  • Academic Ranking of World Universities ( World )

    The Academic Ranking of World Universities is compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The ranking compared 1200 higher education institutions worldwide according to a formula that took into account alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (10 percent), staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20 percent), highly-cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories (20 percent), articles published in Nature and Science (20 percent), the Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index (20 percent) and the per capita academic performance (on the indicators above) of an institution (10 percent). The methodology is set out in an academic article by its originators, N.C. Liu and Y. Cheng. Liu and Cheng explain that the original purpose of doing the ranking was “to find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities, particularly in terms of academic or research performance.” The rankings have been conducted since 2003 and then updated annually.

The institute is a member of the League of European Research Universities.     Paris-Sud 11 University (French: Université Paris-Sud 11) is a French university distributed among several campuses in the southern suburb of Paris (including Orsay, Cachan, Châtenay-Malabry, Sceaux and Kremlin-Bicêtre campuses). The main campus is located in Orsay. It is one of the largest and most renowned French universities, particularly in the sciences. Paris-Sud is ranked 49th in the 2008 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and is the second best French University according to this methodology. Furthermore, the University was ranked 36-39 wolrdwide in 2009 according to Global University Ranking. It was officially recognized as an independent academic institution in 1965, after some of the expanding inner-Paris particle and nuclear physics laboratories were transferred to Orsay, under the impulse of Irène Joliot-Curie. It hosts a great number of laboratories on its large (236 ha) campus. About 26,000 students are currently enrolled. Paris-Sud University comprises some 104 research units.

The University's alumni include 85 Nobel Laureates as of 2009.

    The University of Copenhagen (Danish: Københavns Universitet) is the oldest and largest university and research institution in Denmark. Founded in 1479, it has more than 37,000 students, the majority of whom are female (59%), and more than 7,000 employees. The university has several campuses located in and around Copenhagen, with the oldest located in central Copenhagen. Most courses are taught in Danish; however, many courses are also offered in English and a few in German. The university has 2800 foreign students of which about half are from Nordic countries.

    The University of Manchester is a "red brick" civic university located in Manchester, England. The university was named Sunday Times University of the Year in 2006 after winning the inaugural Times Higher Education Supplement University of the Year prize in 2005. According to The Sunday Times, "Manchester has a formidable reputation spanning most disciplines, but most notably in the life sciences, engineering, humanities, economics, sociology and the social sciences".
